In the News: Building Hope for Older Adults Through Modular Supportive Housing
Supportive Housing of Waterloo (SHOW) was recently featured in the Waterloo Region Record for its bold and compassionate response to the growing crisis of older adult homelessness in our community
The article highlights SHOW’s newest initiative: a 10-unit modular supportive housing build designed specifically for older adults who are experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness — many for the first time in their lives. Located behind SHOW’s existing building at 362 Erb Street West, this project represents both urgency and hope at a time when older adults are the fastest-growing group entering the shelter system.
With support from the Region of Waterloo, including $1 million in funding, SHOW is able to move quickly by using modular construction — allowing homes to be built faster, with less disruption, and at a lower cost than traditional builds. But bricks and mortar are only part of the story.
What truly sets this project apart is the on-site supportive services that will be available to every resident. From day one, individuals will receive personalized support focused on stability, independence, and dignity — helping them not just find housing, but truly feel at home.
This project is a powerful example of what’s possible when community partners, housing providers, and donors come together. As highlighted in the Record, coordinated action and community investment can create real, tangible change in addressing the housing crisis.
None of this work happens without the generosity of supporters who believe that older adults deserve safe, stable housing and a community of care. This modular build is more than a construction project — it’s a promise to our neighbors that they are not forgotten.
Together, we are building more than homes. We are building hope.
