SHOW tenants will be getting a new home and new hope during June

Barb Barnes, a SHOW board member, has been part of the team which has been interviewing prospective tenants who will be occupying 362 Erb St. W. in June. She reports the following:

This has been a humbling experience for this writer. Each individual gave me more insight about what it is like to be homeless. All the road blocks, and walls they encounter every day as they live on the streets striving to survive.

Word on the streets had given folks some idea what the new building had to offer but, when we listed all the amenities they were all very surprised. Statements like “You're kidding”, and Wow! Wow! Wow! were repeated a number of times.

ecurity was another word I heard over, and over. The idea that they could lock a door, sleep in a real bed with sheets & a blanket was really big. “I feel my stress leaving already” was one gentleman's comment.

Much to my surprise, the other room that was met with delight was the kitchen. I got a few brief cooking lessons [from those being interviewed] and some advice on where to shop and save. Meals already being planned by them are chili, pork cutlets (if available at a fair price), rice, and lots of pastas. When we told them that the kitchens would be equipped with not only the appliances, but also pots and pans, cooking utensils, dishes etc.; the eyes lit up and ear to ear smiles appeared.

As each session ended comments like “I now have hope”, “I feel the stress leaving”, or “Why are you (SHOW & Out Of The Cold) doing this for us?” were just some of the comments. There were also beautiful smiles and a lot of thank you's. I think the two most memorable were “Wow it's just like Christmas”, and one individual who crossed their fingers, looked up, and said “I shall pray a lot”.
.

When you are at home, or just ready to go to bed, stop, and take a minute to look around. Drink in everything you can see and touch, I did, and truly realized how very blessed I am.

Partnerships, the key to support provision.

SHOW is delighted that the YWCA Kitchener-Waterloo will be working with us to deliver services to our tenants who will be moving into their new homes during June. The YWCA's experience in supporting those in need will be invaluable as will that of Waterloo Regional Homes for Mental Health Inc. who will be working with tenants with mental health issues.

As the SHOW building becomes occupied over the coming weeks, volunteers will become increasingly important in assisting with programs at the complex as well as helping with activities such as driving people to appointments. Barb Barnes is our volunteer coordinator so if you are interested in helping in this way, please contact her at 519-570-7344 or use the form below:

Adopt a Room fills empty apartments

Jan Lehman, pictured here surveying an almost finished but empty apartment, is a SHOW board member and our fundraising chair. Our Adopt a Room fundraising program encourages individuals and groups to adopt one of the 30 units by committing $2,000 which will go towards “filling” the apartment with basic start-up needs. SHOW is grateful to those who have already made this commitment and encourages more in our community to consider helping our project in this way.

Jan would be happy to hear from new room adopters or from anyone wishing to make a contribution, use the form below to contact her.
